1% VS. 20%

1 Thought:

You can read Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell, and get a sense of why the origin of a person can often play a significant role in their ultimate future.

You can read David Goggins ,Can’t Hurt Me, and get an understanding as to why background and deficiencies should play zero role in your future.

So what is it that determines your future?

You can listen to 100 people, read 100 books and get 100 different reasons as to why people are successful.

Lebron James:

6’9″

250lbs

Basketball Player

James McDonald

5′ nothing

121lbs

Jockey

Could James and Lebron have swapped spots? Put their 10,000 hours in and made it work?

I’m saying no. They both had a physical disposition for the activity they both excelled in. They are the top 1%.

What if Lebron was never introduced to basketball or James to racing horses; would we know either of their names now? Again, I say no.

So for the rest of us who don’t have a natural, god given singular strength I feel we are far better off than the majority. With hard work, focus, and consistency we all have access to being in the top lets say 20% of 5 or 6 things which ultimately makes us more well rounded and highly more valuable and ultimately in demand.

So if you aren’t 7′ tall, aren’t a musical prodigy or aren’t the gods gift to any one specific thing then you have some work to do.

Identify your strengths and act. The compounding of multiple strengths can outweigh a singular strength. The old adage that 1+1=3 also applies to these top 20% skill sets that you have and continue to cultivate.

So if you ever feel “less than” because you don’t have that singular strength I’m suggesting you look at your skill sets under a different lens and recognize your strengths more so in the aggregate.

Be skillful, don’t rely on talent.

1 Question:

Can you step away from all the day to day and make a list of the 4/5 things you are good at (not the best at)? Take those 4/5 things and see how you can showcase each of these skills and then see how can they all accompany each other. Remember synergy is strength!
