Let me start by stating that the concept I am planning to share is not original to me at all and possibly one you are already familiar. I have heard it shared by Tony Robbins and others, and most recently on Modern Wisdom. I am simply sharing how this practice can be applied in what I feel are actionable ways for anyone responsible for a team.
I was recently part of a 20 Group and was asked to present; this topic was what I chose not because its easy but because its immediately something that can be put into action, and although hard work its well worth it. The juice is worth the squeeze.
The Challenge, The Hurdle, The New Way of Doing Business…
As leaders of teams of various sizes (possibly a team of just one (you)) we all are provided big directional changes, a need to grow or perform “X” percentage above the prior year, and so on and so forth.
How often do you immediately say, or more importantly believe, “not a problem”, “easy”, “wish the goal were higher”? I’ll assume not often.
State:
Mindset is a word often used as a replacement for state but there are a few differences. Although similar someones state is far harder to change than that of a mindset. A state is throughout the entire person to include actions, mannerisms, basically all the way to their core.
Story:
The supporting “facts” that so heavily support the state making it nearly unbreakable.
Strategy:
Our plan of attack; our approach to a problem, the analytics
A better approach…
I’ll assume most readers are like me and when faced with a problem want to tackle it head on. We see the challenge and devise an analytical solution to address it. We start with strategy. We make our plan and start going full speed that direction.
Sorry, this won’t work…you first need to address the state which is modified via the story. If you don’t have buy in you will not tackle the situation.
We all can more easily see the reasons “why not” as can our teams in our care so we need to identify the “why we can”…lets get down to the particulars.
Use the particulars and create a compelling story that you and your team can identify with and believe “you can”. Do that and you can change the state. Reminder state and mindset are very similar and ultimately create belief.
Once you have the buy in and the supporting story to carry you and your team through the highs and lows you can all work through the strategy/ plan you put together.
You and your team believe in a goal, you will achieve that goal.

BONUS QUOTE:
Mentioned that the story you create must endure time, highs, and lows so I felt this one was pertinent:
“Endurance is one of the most difficult disciplines, but it is to the one who endures that the final victory comes.”
– Buddha
1 Question:
Are you currently working hard against a plan without “buy in”, without a great story? Do you feel pushing the pause button just for a moment to reset both yours possibly but the mindset of your team would benefit the goal? Consider it!
