Not every pitch goes as planned. Not every sale ends in a “yes”. Sometimes in fact we seem to be on a streak of rejection and being shot down.
This streak can be disheartening and can affect the psyche if not mentally positioned properly. We’ve all been told and heard the stories of all the icons getting an endless streak of no’s before the big break. We’ve all heard of the thousands of missed shots made by Micheal Jordan and how we should parallel it to our lives. Countless examples exist but when it’s our missed shots it seems to take a real emotional toll.
That being said how do we reposition, reset, and move on to the next opportunity with the hope, enthusiasm, and the verve required to win?
The illustration at the header of this post is representative of the 2 equally rewarding outcomes of both a yes and a no.
The client says “yes”. Celebrate the win, when calm from the big win break down the details of the pitch and identify areas that can be replicated and overlaid onto your next opportunity. This sounds like the easy half, but the calm down and identify what we did that was so great part usually gets skipped.
…the reason you are still reading this post
The client says “no.”:
- Don’t close the door. A no to a pitch or idea might be one or two tweaks away from a yes. Let them know you’ll be back.
- Honestly evaluate yourself. Were you as prepared as you should have been; did you put in the work required to earn the yes? If not you know what to do next time.
- Did your idea or pitch address the actual client issue? Did we miss the mark during the needs assessment at the earlier stages when creating the scope of work? “you have 2 ears and 1 mouth for a reason” – quoting grandmas everywhere
- Did you give it your best effort? If yes then shake it off and stay the course; sometimes the yes is a no due to something as simple as bad timing. If you gave it less then your best then that’s an easy fix. Either way, shake it off and don’t get in your head about it; your mindset and attitude are critical to your ongoing success.
Truth is we learn more from rejection than the win. Keep taking your shot and learning from each and every experience.
Sometimes we WIN and sometimes we LEARN!

1 Question:
Have you allowed a few setbacks to lessen your energy? Are you allowing a few “no’s” to get your emotional state out of YOUR control?
Your mindset, your energy, and your emotions are the only things you have TOTAL control over.
Take control again, slow down and learn from each set back and get back at it!
