1 Thought:
Why do you think they say at the beginning of every flight during the safety demonstration they tell you to secure your own oxygen mask before helping others?
Ever thought of that statement? Seems almost selfish, and certainly not very heroic sounding at all; not the actions of a leader or any decent person for sure, right?
Not at all the case.
As leaders we are often quick to jump in and fix issues and situations. That’s what we are built to do.
However to best help and lead others we, ourselves, need to be at our very best.
Here’s a few ways to better serve those in our care:
1. Delegate. You can’t be the best leader if you are unwilling to turn things over to your team. Additionally, if they never get the chance to “own” a part of the goal, they’ll never get to someday lead themselves.
2. Your Fitness. People feel that personal fitness and activity is a luxury for those that have free time. No; it’s a responsibility that you must put on the schedule. (I start daily before 4:00 AM so I can offer my best to my family and team)
3. Eating Habits. Note; I didn’t say diet. Diets have timelines and are built to obtain short term goals and frankly don’t work. If diets were healthy why would you ever want to put an end date on it? Lifestyle changes and habits are forever. (interested in meal plans that work for everyone and forever message me or comment asking for some suggestions).
4. Your Personal Time: The term “work-life balance” is grossly misused. 50/50 doesn’t mean balance for most people and certainly not many that are successful in their personal or work lives. Everyone’s balance and priorities to be fulfilled are different; don’t be steered or accept judgement from others.
5. Clarity: Clear goals and a sense of direction are a must. When you are working hard and putting into the hours and feel there is no clear direction it is time poorly spent, and can be emotionally taxing. Clarity helps you maintain your mental state as well as provide mental well-being and direction to that of your team.
You matter.

1 Question:
Are you pouring from an empty cup? Do you feel sacrificing your time and health puts you at your best for those in your care?
What actions can you take NOW that serve you and others better?
