1 Thought:
Thinking about what your replacement might make their first course of business after you get fired is I feel a provocative way to suggest we look at our existing situation with a new lens.
This could be a slightly painful procedure but one that’s worth having. I can say I have done this practice more than once personally and it never gets easier, but has always produced a needed outcome.
Let me start this by saying this isn’t something you should only do when times are tough and things aren’t going your way; on the contrary. You should apply this when things are going smoothly; here are a few reasons why.
Things are good:
– Your attitude is calm, not in a state of panic.
– Your being proactive, not reactive…keeps you in charge of the situation
– Whatever issues you identify are small, they haven’t had time to develop into anything major
These are just a few reasons, but enough I hope to see the value in not waiting until it’s too late.
A few ways to approach determining what your replacement would change first:
We all have different titles and roles and are in various industries so the best way to start is to make a list of your daily roles, followed by identifying your circle of control. Your circle of control should break out what you can control; what you are in charge of and on the hook to make happen.
Once you’ve made your list of roles and areas of control grade yourself honestly on a scale of 1 -5. Be totally honest; this is for yourself and won’t be shared with anyone else. 5 is absolute home runs and you’re killing it, and a 1 would be you identifying a role you simply aren’t doing at all.
Hope this makes sense.
Remember you were just fired; maintaining this mindset throughout this process is critical. Your predecessor is an excellent choice and they are highly talented, just like you, so they see the misses and holes needing filled.
The reason the above mindset is critical to maintain is it forces you to look at your actions through a different lens. It forces you, to force yourself to take action like a new hire would come into a role to make the big, and needed splash that will get things “back on track”.
Like I opened; this is an awkward and not easy task to apply but It can make a massive difference should you do it completely and honestly.
Best of luck!

1 Question:
Will you take action and do the needed self excavation to rate yourself? After you take the actions needed be sure to do what’s needed and make that splash!
